The Potion Commotion is a 2D puzzle-platformer game that I made in 48 hours for Spooky 2D Jam 2020 in October 2020. Spooky 2D Jam was a game jam hosted by myself (my first time hosting) and which saw over 80 games made by 200+ developers.
This game was another really ambitious project and it was a very hectic weekend, as I was both hosting the game jam AND entering it myself. In 48 hours I came up with the game idea, designed and implemented all the levels/puzzles/mechanics, made all the artwork, sourced all the audio, playtested/bug fixed/polished the game, and added mobile support so it can be played on both PC and mobile - all while also hosting the game jam and being on-hand to help the other jammers out!
This project was a challenging but really worthwhile experience and I was really happy with how the artwork and general atmosphere of the game turned out. The game has a unique core mechanic; all movement is done by hopping! You hold your click/tap in a direction to power up a hop, then release to hop in that direction. I believe this unique movement system helps make the game stand out. The game was made with the Construct 3 game engine. All the artwork was made in Photoshop. The sound effects are from various royalty-free sources. The music was composed and produced by myself for a previous project.
Hosting a game jam for the first time was a new challenge to me, and one that I think I took to well and really enjoyed. I created the game jam page including description, rules, artwork etc, promoted the jam in various ways and built a community around it including a Discord server for 2D game devs that remains active to this day. I intend to make Spooky 2D Jam a yearly event.
